About the magazine

Terrain.org is a digital journal founded in 1998 that explores the intersection of nature, culture, and the built environment. Its founding ethos is rooted in the belief that place matters—that the ways we inhabit, imagine, and alter landscapes are inseparable from the ways we live together. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that engage with environmental and social landscapes, often with a critical eye toward the Anthropocene and its discontents. Over two decades, it has maintained a steady, thoughtful presence, bridging literary and ecological concerns without succumbing to polemic or sentimentality. Core to its mission is a commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue: essays on urban planning sit alongside lyric poems, and interviews with scientists or architects appear next to photo essays. Terrain.org does not merely celebrate nature writing; it interrogates the terms of nature and culture themselves, favoring work that is formally adventurous and intellectually rigorous. The journal’s editorial stance is one of attentive curiosity—welcoming submissions that challenge conventional boundaries between the human and the nonhuman, the rural and the urban, the personal and the political.

Before submitting, read several recent issues to understand the journal’s range and tone—it favors work that is grounded in specific places yet reaches beyond the local. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Submit via Submittable; there is typically no fee for general submissions, though occasional themed calls may have one. Keep cover letters brief and professional. For poetry, send 3–5 poems; for prose, up to 5,000 words. Visual art submissions should include a link to a portfolio. Response times vary from a few weeks to several months; query only after three months. Terrain.org values clarity, originality, and a willingness to engage with the complexities of place without resorting to cliché or didacticism.

Please use our online submission system, via Submittable, at https://terrainorg.submittable.com/submit .
