About the magazine

The Congressional Award is a non-partisan, non-competitive public recognition program established by the United States Congress in 1979 to honor young Americans who set and achieve personal goals in four program areas: Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. Unlike traditional arts fellowships or juried exhibitions, it operates as a structured framework for self-directed achievement, requiring participants to document sustained effort over time and to reflect on their growth. Its founding ethos rests on the conviction that character, discipline, and civic responsibility are cultivated through deliberate practice rather than innate talent or competitive ranking. While not an arts organization per se, the Award has been used by many young artists, writers, and performers as a means to formalize their creative development within the Personal Development category, often in conjunction with service projects that bring art into community settings. The program’s core mission is to empower youth to take ownership of their aspirations, with the Medal representing not a single achievement but a cumulative record of commitment.

Reading periodOpen now

There is no application deadline or competitive selection; participants register online and then submit activity records and validations through a portal as they progress. Artists should treat the Award as a long-term goal-setting tool: choose a creative discipline for Personal Development, pair it with a service component that uses your art for public good, and document your hours and reflections consistently. Be aware that the program requires a minimum age of 13.5 and completion before age 24, and that all activities must be verified by an adult advisor. The Medal is earned, not granted, so clarity of intention and sustained effort matter more than a polished portfolio.
