About the magazine

The Opiate is an independent literary and arts magazine founded in 2013 by poet and editor Andrew Holter. Based in New York City, it publishes poetry, fiction, essays, and visual art with a predilection for work that is formally adventurous, emotionally raw, and resistant to prevailing MFA conventions. The magazine's ethos is rooted in a belief that literature should unsettle rather than comfort, and its pages have consistently featured voices that are urgent, idiosyncratic, and often overlooked by mainstream outlets. Over its decade-long run, The Opiate has maintained a deliberately unpolished, anti-corporate aesthetic, positioning itself as a home for writing that risks failure in pursuit of genuine expression.

Editorial focus

Founded in 2015, The Opiate is a quarterly literary magazine dedicated to publishing envelope-pushing work. It accepts both print and online submissions.

Submitting your work

Reading periodJan 1 to Dec 31
Reading feeYes
PaymentNo payment
Response time3 to 6 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read several issues to understand the magazine's aesthetic, which favors the visceral, the strange, and the unvarnished over the polished or predictable. Send your strongest, most honest work—pieces that feel necessary rather than merely competent. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Expect a small, editor-run operation: response times can be slow, and feedback is rare. Do not query about status until at least three months have passed. Above all, avoid work that feels like it was written to impress an academic committee; The Opiate seeks writing that breathes, bleeds, and takes risks.

Please send submission in a Word document file with a brief bio and what, if anything, motivated you to send your work to The Opiate (it can be as honest as “I want to be published in print”).
