About the magazine

The PERCH is a literary and visual arts journal affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine's Program for Recovery and Community Health (PRCH). Founded on the principle that creative expression is integral to mental health recovery and community integration, the journal provides a platform for individuals who have experienced mental health and substance use challenges, as well as their allies and clinicians. Since its inception, The PERCH has published poetry, prose, and visual art that illuminate the lived experience of recovery, challenging stigma and fostering dialogue between the arts and health sciences. Its annual themed issues, such as 'The Mix,' curate a diversity of voices that reflect the complex, often nonlinear journey of healing and the pursuit of meaningful community life.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Artists and writers should first review past issues to understand the journal's focus on recovery, resilience, and community. Submissions are typically open for annual themed volumes; check the website for specific calls and deadlines. Work that is raw, honest, and reflective of personal or collective experiences with mental health is encouraged, though craft and clarity are still important. Simultaneous submissions are often accepted, but notify promptly if work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief bio that contextualizes your connection to recovery, if comfortable. The editorial team values diverse perspectives and is committed to a supportive review process.
