About the magazine

Thieving Magpie is an artist-run collective and curatorial platform founded in 2016 in Glasgow. Taking its name from Rossini's opera, the organization embraces the figure of the magpie as a scavenger and assembler—one that collects shiny fragments and recombines them into new configurations. This ethos drives an interdisciplinary program of exhibitions, publications, and events that foregrounds collaboration, reuse, and the porous boundaries between artistic disciplines. Rather than presenting polished, thematic group shows, Thieving Magpie favors projects that are provisional, process-based, and responsive to their immediate contexts. The collective operates nomadically, often partnering with existing spaces and institutions to stage interventions that challenge conventional exhibition formats.

Editorial focus

Digital literary quarterly for new, emerging and established writers and artists. The editors seek good writing above anything else: inspired, unbound, and diverse. Original work only.

Artists should approach Thieving Magpie with proposals that are open-ended and adaptable to non-traditional spaces. The collective responds well to projects that engage with found materials, collaboration, or site-specificity. Submissions are typically accepted via email and should include a concise project description, images or work samples, and a clear sense of how the project aligns with the magpie ethos of reuse and recombination. Given the collective's limited capacity, applicants are advised to be patient and to follow up only after a reasonable period. It is also helpful to demonstrate familiarity with the collective's past projects and to propose a concrete, feasible plan rather than a fully realized exhibition.
