About the magazine

Thin Skin is an online platform and occasional print publisher founded in 2019, dedicated to writing that risks vulnerability and formal experimentation. Its name signals an editorial ethos: work that is unarmored, attentive to the friction between self and world, and unafraid of discomfort. The project grew out of a small reading series in Brooklyn and has since published essays, poetry, and hybrid texts by emerging and mid-career writers, with a deliberate pace that favors depth over volume. Thin Skin operates as a curatorial project rather than a traditional magazine, often organizing its issues around loose thematic provocations such as 'exposure,' 'inheritance,' and 'the unsayable.'

Editorial focus

Thin Skin showcases the work of writers fifty and over, who came late to writing. It is a quarterly online international magazine, publishing short stories, flash fiction and poetry. We place ourselves at the literary end of the spectrum, so no genre fiction. We welcome submissions from writers of any background, anywhere in the world.

Submitting your work

Reading periodJan 1 to Dec 31
Reading feeNo
PaymentNo payment
Response timeLess than 3 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Read at least two full issues before submitting; Thin Skin favors work that engages with its thematic calls but does not illustrate them literally. Send polished drafts of essays under 4,000 words or 3–5 poems, with a brief note on why the work fits the current call. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please withdraw promptly if placed elsewhere. Response times typically range from four to eight weeks; if you have not heard back after ten weeks, a polite query is appropriate. The editors value cover letters that are direct and free of flattery—state what you are sending and any relevant context, but avoid listing every prior publication.

Please send us short stories that show mastery of the craft of storytelling; flash fiction that understands the power of brevity; poetry that celebrates language, sensations and emotions. Full guidelines on our website.
