About the magazine

Founded in 2000, tinywords is one of the longest-running online journals dedicated to haiku and related short-form poetry. Its founding ethos was to provide a daily, accessible space for the concise poetic moment—where a single breath of language could be shared and contemplated. Over two decades, it has published thousands of poems from contributors worldwide, maintaining a commitment to the genre's traditional roots while embracing contemporary variations. The journal operates as a daily publication, with each poem presented individually, fostering a meditative reading experience that resists the scroll of social media. Its core mission is to celebrate brevity, precision, and the resonant image, offering a platform for both emerging and established voices in the haiku community.

Editorial focus

tinywords is an international, daily magazine of haiku and micro poetry. Its goal is to publish excellent poetry whose ambitions and effects far outstrip its small size. Founded in 2000, it now produces two issues per year, each of which is published in serial form, one poem per day, on the web as well as via e-mail and SMS text message.

Submitting your work

Reading periodFeb 1 to Feb 28
Reading feeNo
PaymentNo payment
Response timeLess than 3 months
Simultaneous submissionsNo
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Submit only previously unpublished haiku or senryu—typically 1–3 lines—that adhere to the spirit of the form: a keen observation of nature or human nature, often with a seasonal reference or a turn of insight. Avoid rhyme, titles, and excessive punctuation. Simultaneous submissions are discouraged; wait for a response before submitting elsewhere. Expect a response within a few weeks. Read several issues before submitting to understand the editor's taste, which favors clarity, freshness, and emotional resonance over cleverness. Include a brief bio in your cover letter, but let the poems speak first.

Before submitting please read a recent issue or two archived at our website to see what we publish and more particularly, to better know our understanding of Japanese forms and preferences in micro poetry. We give preference to work that has not been previously published in any literary journal, though we’ll occasionally republish poems that have appeared elsewhere. Appearance on Twitter, personal blogs or online poetry discussion forums is no impediment to acceptance. Please submit no more than five poems per reading period.
