Editorial focus
Welter is an annual print literary magazine—originated in 1965—now produced by the MFA program at the University of Baltimore. Additional content is published online. As their name implies, they are looking for work that is provocative, exciting, relevant, and full of heat. They accept fiction, poetry, and varieties of nonfiction from seasoned and emerging writers.
Submitting your work
Welter accepts submissions through its online portal during designated reading periods, typically in the fall and spring. Before submitting, read several recent issues to understand the journal's aesthetic—work that is lyrical, surprising, and willing to break form. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your publication history, if any, and a note about how your work aligns with Welter's mission. Avoid overly formal or generic cover letters; the editors value authenticity. Response times vary, but generally range from one to three months. For poetry, send up to five poems; for prose, up to 5,000 words. Welter also welcomes visual art and hybrid media, but query first.
Send us your best work—we’re looking for writing that honors craft while bringing the news. Please check the website for the latest submission period information.
