About the magazine

Wild Garlic is an online literary journal founded in 2020 by a collective of writers and editors seeking to create a space for writing that is deeply rooted in the natural world, place, and the senses. The journal takes its name from the wild allium, a plant that emerges in early spring, often in woodland shade, and is known for its pungent, unmistakable presence—a fitting metaphor for the kind of writing the editors champion: work that is subtle yet insistent, grounded in observation, and attentive to the more-than-human world. Since its inception, Wild Garlic has published poetry, short fiction, and essays that explore the intersections of landscape, memory, and ecology, with a particular emphasis on voices that are underrepresented in traditional nature writing. The journal is committed to fostering a community of writers who approach the natural world with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to engage with its complexities, including the environmental and social urgencies of our time.

Editorial focus

Wild Garlic is a triannual online literary journal produced by the Brooklyn Women’s Writing Group. It publishes women-identified writers from all over. It features courageous, wild writing of all genres. It fosters the full range of voices that find space and community within the group each week and favor love of practice over perfection of product.

Reading feeNo

Response timeLess than 3 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read at least one full issue to understand the journal's aesthetic and thematic range. Wild Garlic favors work that is specific, sensory, and avoids generalized nature reverence; strong submissions often hinge on precise observation and a distinctive voice. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your submission, mentioning any relevant connection to place or ecology, but keep it concise. The editors appreciate writing that takes risks with form while remaining accessible. Response times vary, but queries after three months are reasonable. Wild Garlic is particularly interested in hearing from writers from marginalized communities and those writing about landscapes that are often overlooked.

Wild Garlic accepts simultaneous submissions, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere. Longer pieces of writing in any genre capped at 5,000 words. We also gladly accept submissions with visual components (painting, drawing, comics) as well.
