About the magazine

WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease was founded in 1999 by three women who survived heart attacks and recognized that women's cardiovascular health was being systematically overlooked in research, clinical practice, and public awareness. What began as a patient-led advocacy effort has grown into a national organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of women living with or at risk for heart disease. Its core mission is threefold: to provide peer support through a national network of patient educators, to advocate for policies that prioritize women's heart health, and to educate both the public and healthcare providers about the distinct symptoms and risks women face. The annual Science & Leadership Symposium, held in person, exemplifies this mission by convening survivors, clinicians, researchers, and advocates for a focused exchange of knowledge and strategy.

While WomenHeart does not operate as a traditional arts or cultural residency, artists and cultural workers interested in collaborating or applying for its programs should approach with a clear understanding of its health-focused mission. The organization welcomes partnerships that amplify patient stories or translate medical complexity into accessible public messaging, but proposals must demonstrate direct relevance to women's cardiovascular health. For the Science & Leadership Symposium, applications are typically open to patient advocates, healthcare professionals, and researchers rather than artists per se; however, creative professionals with a documented commitment to health equity may find opportunities to contribute through storytelling, design, or community engagement. It is advisable to review the symposium's specific call for participants and to contact the organization directly to discuss how artistic practice might align with its advocacy goals.
