About the magazine

Writing By Writers is a nonprofit literary organization founded in 2010 by poets and writers who sought to create a space where serious literary craft could be pursued without the distractions of urban literary life. Its flagship program, the Tomales Bay Workshops, quickly gained a reputation for its intimate, generative atmosphere, and the organization has since expanded to include residencies in Boulder, Colorado, and a growing roster of workshops and retreats. The core mission is to support writers at all stages of their careers through time, space, and community, with an emphasis on the written word as a vital art form. The residencies, offered annually, provide uninterrupted time in a supportive environment, often in natural settings conducive to deep work.

Applicants should approach Writing By Writers with a clear sense of their project and a willingness to engage in a communal writing environment. The organization values literary quality and seriousness of purpose over publication credits, though a strong writing sample is essential. Residency applications typically require a project description, a writing sample, and a statement of intent. Deadlines are firm, and early preparation is advised. Because the residencies are small, competition is significant; however, the selection process is holistic, considering the potential for the proposed work to benefit from the specific setting and community. Writers are encouraged to articulate how the residency would advance their practice, not just their career.
