About the magazine

Washington Writers' Publishing House (WWPH) is a nonprofit, cooperative press founded in 1974 by a group of writers in the Washington, D.C. area. Its founding ethos is rooted in community, literary craft, and the belief that writers should have a direct hand in publishing. Over five decades, WWPH has published poetry, fiction, and nonfiction by authors from the Mid-Atlantic region, maintaining a commitment to work that is both artistically serious and accessible. The press is known for its annual contests, including the Jean Feldman Poetry Prize and the Washington Writers' Publishing House Fiction Prize, which offer publication to emerging and established writers. Its Grace & Gravity series, now in its twelfth volume with 'Grace in Justice,' exemplifies its ongoing dedication to thematic anthologies that explore contemporary moral and social questions through literary lenses.

Editorial focus

WWPH Writes is looking for poetry and fiction that celebrates, unsettles, and questions the lives in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas (DMV) and in the nation.

Writers should approach WWPH with an understanding of its cooperative, community-oriented spirit. Submissions are typically accepted through annual contests or themed anthologies, so checking the website for open calls is essential. Work should demonstrate strong literary merit and a connection to the Mid-Atlantic region, though this is not always mandatory. Because the press is run by writers, patience and professionalism in correspondence are appreciated. Simultaneous submissions are often allowed, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Reading past WWPH publications will give a clear sense of the aesthetic and thematic range the press favors.

We seek work that is lyrical and dynamic, and we believe in cultivating a diverse environment of content, form, risk, and experimentation. New perspectives and voices with craft and fierceness are strongly encouraged to submit. Send us your best work and challenge us with your ideas and your writing.
