Black Warrior Review — Submissions
Overview
Black Warrior Review has long served as a vital venue for emerging and established voices in contemporary literature. Founded in 1974 and produced by graduate students in the University of Alabama’s MFA program, the journal maintains a rigorous editorial standard that balances formal experimentation with narrative and lyrical craft. Its pages have featured early work by writers who later became central to the American literary landscape, reflecting a curatorial eye that is both discerning and adventurous. The journal publishes two issues per year, each comprising a carefully curated mix of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. While the exact contents of any given issue are shaped by the submissions received, the editorial team consistently seeks work that demonstrates a command of language, a distinctive sensibility, and an engagement with the complexities of the human experience. There is no house style; instead, the editors prioritize writing that feels necessary and urgent, whether through innovation in form or depth of insight. For this submission period, Black Warrior Review welcomes unsolicited manuscripts from writers at all stages of their careers. The journal does not charge a reading fee, ensuring that access remains open to a broad community of writers. Accepted work will appear in a future issue, both in print and, in some cases, online, reaching a readership that includes fellow writers, scholars, and devoted readers of literary magazines. The editorial vision remains rooted in the belief that literature can illuminate, challenge, and transform.
