About the magazine

Founded in 1974 at the University of Alabama, Black Warrior Review is one of the longest-running literary journals in the United States. Named after the river that borders the university, the magazine has maintained a steadfast commitment to publishing innovative fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction that challenges conventional narratives and forms. Over five decades, BWR has evolved from a regional literary outlet into a nationally recognized forum for both emerging and established voices, known for its discerning editorial eye and willingness to take risks on work that defies easy categorization.

Editorial focus

Founded in 1974, Black Warrior Review publishes contemporary fiction, poetry, and nonfiction by award-winning writers alongside work by new and emerging voices. Issues also feature art, comics, and a curated chapbook. Each summer reading period, BWR hosts a contest with guest editors and cash prizes in each genre.

Writers should familiarize themselves with recent issues to understand the journal's aesthetic range, which favors work that is linguistically adventurous, emotionally resonant, and structurally deliberate. General submissions are typically open for fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, with occasional themed calls. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Expect response times of several months; patience is advised. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any, but avoid excessive self-promotion. BWR values voices from diverse backgrounds and encourages submissions from underrepresented writers.

BWR only takes online submissions unless you do not have access to a computer/internet. Please visit our website for details. Before sending, please check our website for features, read interviews with masthead or contest judges, or consider buying an issue! As a graduate-run journal, tastes change every year, so our current calls for submissions are the most up-to-date way to know what our editors are looking for.
