Cave Canem: Cave Canem Fellowship

Overview
Cave Canem, a venerated institution dedicated to nurturing Black poets, opens its annual Fellowship application. The selected Fellows convene at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg for a retreat that comprises intensive poetry workshops and public readings. This gathering is designed to foster both craft and community, allowing poets to engage deeply with esteemed faculty and a cohort of peers. The retreat is offered at no cost to Fellows, underwritten by a network of institutional funders and individual donors. This commitment ensures that financial barriers do not impede participation. Fellows are afforded the time and space to develop their work within a supportive environment that honors the full spectrum of poetic traditions. The curatorial vision embraces a wide range of aesthetic approaches: from blues and confessional to experimental, dramatic, lyric, narrative, performance, and political poetry. The Fellowship does not prescribe a singular style; rather, it seeks poets whose work demonstrates rigor, originality, and a serious engagement with the art form. The retreat is an opportunity for sustained intellectual and creative exchange, not a competition for publication or prizes.
