PRISM international: GENERAL Prose Submissions — Fiction
Overview
PRISM international has served as a durable venue for new fiction since its founding at the University of British Columbia, publishing work from both established and emerging writers in Canada and abroad. Its editorial identity is shaped by an internationalist outlook and a willingness to take on original, formally ambitious prose rather than work that merely satisfies prevailing market tastes. The journal's reading period is continuous, though the deadline for this cycle is November 15, 2026. There is no submission fee, and the journal does not charge for consideration. Writers should note the institutional boundaries that govern eligibility: current and incoming students and faculty of UBC's Creative Writing Program, including the Optional-Residency MFA, are excluded; incoming students whose work is already under consideration must withdraw it; UBC alumni may not have taken a Creative Writing Program course within the previous two years. PRISM also does not publish the same writer twice in a single publication year. These restrictions are administrative rather than aesthetic, but they are enforced. The journal's stated interest is in exciting, original material, a phrase that in practice signals openness to a range of fictional modes, including queer and LGBTQ+ perspectives, without prescribing a house style. Response times run between two and six months depending on the volume of submissions, which is typical for a journal of this scale and reputation. The absence of a prize or honorarium in the listing should be understood plainly: this is a publication credit in a respected literary magazine, not a contest.
