About the magazine

Founded in 1959 at the University of British Columbia, PRISM International is one of Canada’s longest-running literary magazines. It was established by a group of writers and editors—including Earle Birney and Jan de Bruyn—who sought to create a journal that would publish emerging and established voices from Canada and beyond, with a particular emphasis on poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation. Over six decades, PRISM has maintained a commitment to literary excellence, eclecticism, and the belief that serious writing deserves a serious readership. Its pages have featured early work by many writers who went on to significant careers, and it continues to be a vital venue for contemporary writing in English and translation.

Editorial focus

PRISM Internationa l is a quarterly magazine whose mandate is to publish the best in contemporary writing and translation from Canada and around the world. Writing from PRISM has been featured in Best American Stories, Best American Essays and the Journey Prize Stories, amongst other noted publications. Though best known for its fiction and poetry, PRISM does not neglect the other literary arts. Creative nonfiction, drama, and translation are regular features.

PRISM welcomes submissions of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation. Before submitting, read several recent issues to understand the range of work the magazine publishes—it is eclectic but consistently values craft, voice, and risk. Follow the guidelines on the website precisely: use the online submission system, include a brief cover letter, and adhere to length limits (typically up to 5 poems, 4,000 words of prose). Simultaneous submissions are accepted if noted, but notify immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. The magazine receives thousands of submissions annually; response times can be several months, so patience is advised. For contest submissions, note that entry fees include a subscription and that judges often change yearly. Proofread carefully; presentation matters, but the writing itself is paramount.
