Five Points: Very Short Fiction
Overview
Five Points, the literary journal housed at Georgia State University, has long been a venue where formal compression and narrative risk are taken seriously. This call is for its Flash Fiction issue, scheduled for May 2026 and placed under the guest editorship of Josh Russell, a writer whose own work is attentive to the sentence as a unit of pressure and surprise. The journal is not seeking mere brevity; it is seeking the kind of writing that justifies the very short form—work in which every line carries structural and emotional weight. The parameters are exacting and transparent. Submissions must not exceed 500 words, and only one flash piece may be sent per submission. Previously published work, in any format, is ineligible. The journal accepts simultaneous submissions, and electronic submission is the sole channel. Flash translations are explicitly welcomed and should be directed to the same portal. A submission fee of $3.00 (USD) applies. What the journal offers is publication in a dedicated issue, editorial attention from a guest editor with a distinct curatorial sensibility, and placement alongside other writers working at the outer edge of concision. There is no cash prize attached to this call; the reward is the editorial context itself. Writers should understand this as a submission to a rigorous literary magazine, not a contest, and should calibrate their expectations accordingly.
