So to Speak: FICTION Print Issue
Overview
So to Speak is a literary magazine with a longstanding commitment to intersectional feminist thought, and its fiction section is actively seeking short stories and flash fiction that engage, challenge, and surprise. The editors have articulated a clear curatorial preference for narratives that traverse multiple axes of identity—race, class, ability, sexuality, and gender—and that amplify perspectives too often marginalized in contemporary letters. This is not a call for didacticism but for fiction that earns its insights through craft and complexity. The reading period closes on November 1, 2026. A submission fee of $4.00 (USD) applies. Each contributor whose work is selected for the print issue will receive a $100 prize. The magazine operates online and remotely, with no geographic restriction on submissions. The editors have noted that they frequently receive stories reflecting the perspective of white, cisgender, heterosexual women, and they explicitly ask that submissions contribute something new to the conversation. They express a preference for "Own Voices" work—stories featuring characters and intersections the writer knows intimately. While no content area is off limits, the fiction team is inspired by authors such as Toni Morrison, Carmen Maria Machado, Ottessa Moshfegh, J.M. Coetzee, and Julia Armfield, suggesting a taste for prose that is formally assured, psychologically acute, and unafraid of discomfort.
