About the magazine

So to Speak: A Feminist Journal of Language and Art is a literary and arts journal founded in 1993 by graduate students at George Mason University. Rooted in feminist and intersectional frameworks, the journal publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that challenge dominant narratives and amplify marginalized voices. Its mission is to foster a community of writers and artists committed to social justice, linguistic experimentation, and critical engagement with gender, race, sexuality, and class.

Editorial focus

So to Speak was founded as a feminist journal in 1993 by an editorial collective of MFA candidates at George Mason University. As the journal has evolved over the years, so has its outlook on feminism. So to Speak believes in an intersectional feminist outlook that includes, advocates for, and amplifies the perspectives & experiences of marginalized individuals—as demonstrated by the work they publish.

They seek work that engages with feminist, intersectional, and social justice themes, so ensure your submission aligns with their mission. It is no secret that the literary canon and literary journals are largely comprised of heteronormative, patriarchal, cisgender, able-bodied white men. So to Speak seeks work by writers, poets, and artists who want to challenge and change the identity of the “canonical” writer. Our mission is to provide a digital/print platform to amplify the voices of BIPOC, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, nonbinary people, women, neurodivergent people, people of all different religions or none, migrants, refugees & immigrants (regardless of citizenship), and incarcerated writers.
