SLAB — Submissions
Overview
SLAB is a literary magazine with a longstanding commitment to publishing innovative writing that challenges conventional forms and explores the boundaries of language. Edited by graduate students and faculty at Slippery Rock University, the journal has a history of featuring both emerging and established voices, with an emphasis on work that is intellectually rigorous and emotionally resonant. The journal seeks fiction, poetry, and nonfiction that demonstrate a mastery of craft and a willingness to take risks. While SLAB does not prescribe a single aesthetic, it favors writing that is attentive to the possibilities of language, whether through formal experimentation, narrative innovation, or lyrical precision. The editors are particularly interested in work that engages with contemporary issues without sacrificing complexity or nuance. Submissions are read year-round, with a deadline of April 15, 2027, for the next issue. There is no fee to submit. Accepted writers receive publication in SLAB and two contributor copies. The journal does not offer monetary payment, but its pages have served as a platform for writers who have gone on to significant literary careers. The editorial vision is one of curation rather than competition: the aim is to assemble a collection of writing that speaks to the present moment while enduring beyond it.
