Scribendi — Photography

Overview
Scribendi is the annual literary and arts journal produced by the University of New Mexico, a publication with a long-standing commitment to presenting emerging and established voices across disciplines. Its photography category operates under a strict blind jury process: the work is evaluated on its own terms, without the mediation of a name, biography, or reputation. This is a curatorial stance worth taking seriously. It means the photograph must carry its own weight, and it means the jury is reading images rather than credentials. The parameters are precise. Photographers may submit up to three titled photographs, in black and white, color, or any combination of the two. Untitled works are not considered. Each submission must be accompanied by an artist's statement of no more than 250 words addressing the intent behind the piece, the creation process, and any other context the artist wishes the jury to have. All files must be submitted digitally in .JPG format. There is no submission fee. What the journal offers is publication in a nationally distributed university journal with a serious editorial tradition, and the validation of selection by a blind jury. The absence of a cash prize or exhibition should not be mistaken for a lack of stakes. For photographers building a record of publication, particularly those without gallery representation or an extensive exhibition history, a blind-juried placement in a journal of this kind is a meaningful credential, earned on the strength of the work alone.
