Callaloo — General Submissions — Fiction
Overview
Callaloo occupies a singular position in American letters: a journal founded to publish creative work by and critical studies of African Americans and peoples of African descent throughout the African Diaspora. Its pages have, for decades, held fiction, poetry, scholarly articles, interviews, book reviews, creative nonfiction, and visual art in the same binding, treating the literary and the critical as continuous rather than separate enterprises. A fiction submission here enters a conversation that includes both the story and the thought surrounding it. The journal's scope is deliberately diasporic. Studies of life and culture in the Black world appear regularly alongside wide-ranging cultural criticism, which means fiction is read in the context of an intellectual project rather than as isolated entertainment. For the writer, this is an invitation to consider how a story sits within a larger field of inquiry—how narrative form, voice, and subject matter might speak to or against the critical work the journal also publishes. General submissions are open from August 1, 2026 to May 1, 2027. There is no submission fee. Prose manuscripts are suggested not to exceed 6,000 words, excluding abstract and references in the case of scholarly articles, though submissions of up to 10,000 words will be considered if the piece warrants it. Manuscripts must be double-spaced (except poetry) and submitted as Word (.doc or .docx) or .rtf files. Identifying information—author's name, address, phone number, and email address—must not appear in the manuscript, the submission title, or the file name. This is a blind-reading protocol, and it is enforced at the level of the file itself.
