The PERCH — The Mix — Vol.9, Fall 2027
Overview
The PERCH is a creative arts journal with mental health themes, produced and published by the Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health. Its editorial mandate centers on original voices—work that speaks from lived experience rather than about it from a clinical remove. The journal occupies a distinct position at the intersection of the literary and visual arts and the discourse of recovery, and its institutional anchor at Yale lends the project a seriousness of purpose that distinguishes it from journals organized around illness as spectacle or confession alone. The forthcoming issue, THE MIX, takes as its organizing principle the double-sided nature of mental illness and mental health. The editors describe a complex, tangled, and beautiful mixture of emotions, attitudes, and experiences: the genuine pain of psychiatric illness—sometimes excruciating, at times cruelly limiting to hopes and dreams—set alongside the depth, awareness, and appreciation of each moment that many psychiatric survivors report from their journeys. The journal explicitly declines to romanticize the burdens of illness; the theme asks instead for work that holds both realities without resolving them into easy consolation or despair. This is an open call for a new issue to be published in October 2027. There is no submission fee. The journal seeks original work across disciplines, and the editors' framing suggests a curatorial preference for complexity over resolution—for work that can sustain contradiction, ambivalence, and the untidy texture of lived mental health experience. Artists and writers considering submission should read the full call and guidelines on the journal's site before preparing materials.
