Reynolds Journalism Institute — Rural Revenue Transformation Workshop 2027
Overview
The Reynolds Journalism Institute will convene its inaugural Rural Revenue Transformation Workshop on May 7 and 8, 2027, at its facilities in Columbia, Missouri. The program is designed for news, information, and community leaders whose work is situated in and serves rural, low-income, and geographically dispersed populations. Rather than importing revenue models developed for large, densely populated markets, the workshop proceeds from the premise that such tactics often fail where broadband and civic infrastructure are absent or uneven. The two days are structured as hands-on sessions and collaborative activities, with participants working through solutions specific to their own communities. RJI will provide a local hotel room for the nights of May 6 through May 9, 2027, and a limited number of flight scholarships for those most in need. There is no application fee. The institute's framing is explicit: the goal is to help leaders create transformative collaborative solutions, learn from one another, and build strategies calibrated to the conditions they actually face. This is not a general conference on media business but a working session for a defined constituency. The workshop's scope is deliberately narrow and its method is peer-driven. It assumes that the most useful expertise resides among those already operating in rural and low-income contexts, and that the institute's role is to convene, house, and partially fund that exchange. Applicants should understand the event as a commitment to two full days of collaborative problem-solving rather than a series of presentations.
