Writing By Writers — All Residencies 2027

Overview
Writing By Writers operates residencies of one and two weeks in the United States and abroad, extending its purview across fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, and screenwriting. The organization provides lodging free of charge, while residents assume responsibility for meals, transportation, and personal needs. The residency is intended for writers only; spouses, children, or friends are not permitted unless applying as a co-resident. This structure places the working writer at the center of the experience, without the distractions of accompanying guests. Selection is made by Pam Houston, author of the short story collection Cowboys Are My Weakness, the memoir Deep Creek: Finding Hope In The High Country, and seven other books of fiction and nonfiction. Her work has received multiple Western States, Mountains and Plains, and Colorado Book Awards, and her stories have appeared in Best American Short Stories, the O. Henry Prize Anthology, and Best American Short Stories of the Century. She teaches creative writing at The Institute of American Indian Arts. Houston's dual practice in fiction and nonfiction, and her long engagement with place and landscape, suggest a curatorial sensibility attentive to voice, emotional precision, and the integrity of the sentence. The application deadline is October 16, 2026, with a fee of $50.00 USD. There is no monetary prize; the residency itself—time, lodging, and the company of serious writers—is the award. Writers should note that the residency does not cover meals, transportation, or personal needs, and that the absence of spouses, children, or friends is a condition of participation unless applying as a co-resident. The opportunity is best understood as an investment in uninterrupted work, selected by a single distinguished writer rather than a committee.
