Shot Glass Issue #51

Overview
Shot Glass Journal is an online poetry journal with a singular focus: short poetry. It publishes free verse and formal poetry of 16 lines or less, as well as prose poetry not exceeding ten lines. The journal is a project of Muse-Pie Press, an established independent publisher, and issues are posted three times a year—at the end of January, May, and September—with submissions closing on the first of those months. Submissions are accepted year-round, and there is no fee to submit. The journal accepts no more than five poems per poet, a constraint that places a premium on selection and self-editing. The journal's curatorial vision is defined by compression and precision. It seeks work that achieves its effect within a narrow frame, whether through traditional forms, free verse, or the hybrid space of prose poetry. Because each issue features a limited selection of poets, the editorial standard is exacting; response times may extend until just prior to posting, reflecting a careful review process. The journal maintains a strict policy on prior publication: any poem that has appeared on a blog, website, social-networking site, or another online journal is considered published and is ineligible. Work posted in a private writing forum intended only for that forum's members is treated as unpublished. For the poet, the opportunity is straightforward: publication in a journal that has sustained a clear aesthetic mandate for over fifty issues. There is no fee, no prize, and no physical location; the reward is placement in an online issue alongside other poets working in short forms. The journal does not offer editorial feedback, and the burden falls on the submitter to ensure that each poem is original, unpublished, and within the line limits. Issue #51 will be posted in January 2027, and the deadline for submissions is January 1, 2027.
