Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity — HIFMB & HWK Marine Biodiversity Artist-in-Residence
Overview
This residency is a joint initiative between the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) and the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK), two institutions situated in northern Germany. HIFMB conducts fundamental research on the functional role of marine biodiversity, while HWK is an Institute for Advanced Study that hosts fellows across disciplines. The programme places a visual artist within this scientific milieu, not as an illustrator but as a peer investigator. The residency is designed for artists whose practices engage with ecological systems, scientific knowledge production, or the cultural dimensions of environmental change. The selected artist receives a monthly stipend of €2,500, travel costs, and a living studio. The residency is located in Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, with access to both institutes' research communities. There is no application fee. The programme does not prescribe a required output; instead, it supports the development of work that emerges from sustained dialogue with marine biodiversity scientists. Artists working in visual art, multimedia, and related fields are eligible. The curatorial vision is one of genuine exchange: the artist is expected to participate in the intellectual life of the institutes, attending seminars, engaging with researchers, and contributing to discourse. The residency is not a retreat for solitary production but a collaborative space where artistic and scientific methodologies can inform one another. The jury will look for proposals that demonstrate a serious, informed interest in marine biodiversity and a clear sense of how the residency would advance the artist's practice.
