Yas Press — 2027 New Hampshire Teen Poetry Prize
Overview
The New Hampshire Teen Poetry Prize operates at the intersection of regional literary stewardship and academic patronage. Funded by the YAS Foundation and managed by the University of New Hampshire's English Department, the award is designed to recognize excellence in poetry written by high school–aged residents of New Hampshire. It is not a general open call but a geographically and demographically specific invitation: the jury seeks work from writers between the ages of 13 and 19 who are willing to see their poems enter a public record through the Young Poets Anthology. The prize structure is deliberately concrete. Three grand prize winners each receive $500, and all selected poets are published in the anthology. Grand prize winners are further asked to read at the Nossrat Yassini Poetry Festival on the evening of April 16, 2027. The honorarium is awarded in exchange for, or after, that appearance. There is no submission fee. The deadline is December 2, 2026. The curatorial vision is broad in form but strict in origin. Submissions may include free verse, formal poetry, prose poetry, song lyrics, and spoken word—the category of 'poetry' is treated expansively. What unites the work is not a single aesthetic but a commitment to original writing in verse by young practitioners within New Hampshire. The prize functions as both a recognition and a pipeline: from manuscript to anthology to public reading, with the university and foundation acting as institutional hosts.
