Atlantic Center for the Arts — Bob Faust, Residency 199

Overview
Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) is a longstanding residency program that convenes small cohorts of artists for intensive, process-driven work under the guidance of a Master Artist. Residency 199, led by Bob Faust, takes place from April 25 to May 15, 2027, and is structured around a single thematic inquiry: the spectrum between art and design. Faust, whose own practice operates in that interstitial space, frames the residency as a cohort of "purpose-led makers" who will interrogate how individual practices inhabit and move along that spectrum. The setting is deliberately low-key but intentional—a working environment where discussion, material exploration, and the refinement of meaning take precedence over production quotas or public outcomes. The residency is open to all disciplines, with no prerequisites. Faust explicitly addresses the common condition of being both artist and designer, proposing that this fluidity contains a "special fuel" that deeper understanding can activate. The cohort will discuss existing and in-progress projects, push meaning, connect materials, explore aesthetics, and increase impact. The curatorial vision is not to resolve the art/design binary but to use it as a productive tension—a lens through which participants can sharpen the purpose and resonance of their work. Artists receive three weeks of focused time, critical exchange with Faust and peers, and the support of ACA's residency infrastructure. A fee of $25.00 (USD) is required to apply; scholarships may be available. The application deadline is February 25, 2027, at 11:59 PM EST. This is a residency for those who treat the question of purpose as central to their practice, regardless of medium or career stage.
