Dzanc Poetry Prize
Overview
The Dzanc Books Poetry Prize is an annual award for a book-length poetry collection, open to new, upcoming, and established writers. The press seeks daring, original, and innovative work, with no hard minimum page count though collections generally exceed 60 pages. The winner receives a $1,500 advance and publication by Dzanc Books, a independent press known for its commitment to literary risk and underrepresented voices. Submissions are accepted from June 1 through midnight on October 31, with a $25 fee. Manuscripts must be previously unpublished as book-length collections and should include a brief synopsis, author bio, and contact information. The full work must be formatted as a PDF, Word .doc, or .docx file; physical entries are not accepted. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, and agented submissions are eligible, provided agency contact information is included. The winning submission and a short list of finalists will be announced on the Dzanc web page in December. The prize reflects Dzanc's curatorial vision: a dedication to poetry that challenges convention and expands the possibilities of the form. By welcoming both emerging and established poets, the award serves as a platform for collections that might otherwise struggle to find a home in a commercial market. The absence of a strict page minimum further signals an openness to unconventional structures and lengths, prioritizing artistic merit over marketability.
