Dzanc Books was founded in 2006 as a nonprofit literary press dedicated to publishing innovative, character-driven fiction and poetry that might be overlooked by commercial houses. From its inception, Dzanc has prioritized the author’s voice over market trends, fostering a community of writers through its literary magazine, The Collagist, and its residency programs. The press’s ethos is one of serious craft and generous mentorship, aiming to sustain a diverse ecosystem of independent literature.

Writers should review Dzanc’s specific contest guidelines carefully, as each prize has distinct eligibility and formatting requirements. The press values originality and emotional resonance over commercial appeal, so submissions should demonstrate a strong, distinctive voice. It is advisable to read recent Dzanc titles to understand the aesthetic range before submitting. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere.
We’re looking for great literary fiction and nonfiction. The manuscript itself is what matters to us.
