London Writers Centre — Free Reads 2026-27

Overview
Free Reads is a longstanding initiative managed by The Literary Consultancy (TLC) and funded by Arts Council England, designed to provide writers facing financial barriers with access to professional editorial feedback. The London Writers Centre has participated as an official partner for over fifteen years, during which it has supported more than one hundred London-based writers through this scheme. The programme reflects a commitment to sustaining literary practice across economic divides, offering not charity but rigorous, confidential assessment from experienced TLC readers. Successful applicants may receive one of two forms of support. A Manuscript Assessment is available to writers with a complete or partially complete manuscript, who will receive a full or partial read and a detailed assessment report. Alternatively, a Submission Package Report is offered to writers who have a completed manuscript, have already received editorial support, and now seek to refine their submission materials—such as synopsis, cover letter, and sample pages—before approaching agents or publishers. Both routes are intended to sharpen the work and its presentation at critical junctures. The curatorial vision behind Free Reads is one of equitable access and craft development. By removing the cost barrier to professional feedback, the scheme enables writers to benefit from the same calibre of editorial insight available to those who can afford private consultancy. The London Writers Centre’s role as a partner underscores its investment in London’s writing community, particularly those whose voices and stories might otherwise remain unheard due to economic circumstance. This is not a prize or a publication opportunity, but a focused intervention in a writer’s development, delivered with discretion and respect for the work.
