Flyway: Journal of Writing and Environment: Poetry Submissions
Overview
Flyway: Journal of Writing & Environment, based at Iowa State University, is an online journal dedicated to exploring the multifaceted concept of environment—rural, urban, suburban, built, or wild—and its social and political implications. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, short scripts, and visual art, positioning itself as a vital forum for work that interrogates the intersections of place, ecology, and culture. For this poetry call, Flyway seeks up to five poems per submission, with prose poems between 500 and 750 words. All poems must be combined into a single document. The reading period for the Spring 2027 issue runs from September 1 to October 15, 2026. A $3 fee applies. While no prize is offered, publication in Flyway provides a platform for poets engaging with environmental themes in expansive and critical ways. The journal's curatorial vision is rooted in a broad understanding of environment, welcoming work that addresses not only natural landscapes but also the constructed and social spaces we inhabit. Poets whose work examines the politics of place, environmental justice, queer ecologies, and the complexities of human and non-human relationships will find a receptive audience here.
