Red Hen Press — Quill (Queer) Prose Award

Overview
The Quill Prose Award, established in 2015 by Tobi Harper Petrie of Red Hen Press, is an annual submission-based prize dedicated to publishing quality literature by queer writers. It seeks a work of previously unpublished prose—including self-published works—with a minimum of 150 pages. The award carries a $1,000 prize and publication of the awarded manuscript by Red Hen Press. The 2026 final judge is Wes Jamison. The entry fee is $10, and the deadline for entries is November 30, 2026. The award is open to all writers, with specific exceptions: authors who have had a full-length work published by Red Hen Press or a full-length work currently under consideration by Red Hen Press; employees, interns, or contractors of Red Hen Press; relatives of employees or members of the executive board of directors; and relatives or individuals connected to the final judge. The competition is administered through an annual submission process, and the awarded manuscript is selected by the final judge. Red Hen Press, a nonprofit literary publisher, has a longstanding commitment to diverse voices. The Quill Prose Award specifically supports queer writers, offering both financial recognition and a path to publication. The press seeks manuscripts that demonstrate literary merit and originality, and the award is designed to bring important queer prose to a wider readership.
