Sundance Institute Sandbox Fund

Overview
The Sundance Institute Sandbox Fund is a grant initiative designed to support projects that explore the intersection of science and storytelling. With a focus on creative narrative techniques, the fund seeks to broaden and redefine conventional portrayals of scientists and scientific practice. Grants are available at three stages: Development (up to $40,000), Production (up to $100,000), and Post-Production (up to $100,000). While the fund is administered by Sundance Institute, it is open to projects across a range of disciplines, including fiction, nonfiction, essay, film, documentary, dance, theater, memoir, and hybrid forms. This reflects a curatorial vision that values cross-disciplinary approaches and diverse perspectives in science communication. The fund emphasizes projects that highlight diversity in science, particularly those featuring characters, topics, or disciplines that challenge and expand traditional notions of who scientists are and what scientific work entails. By providing substantial financial support at critical stages of development, the Sandbox Fund enables creators to realize ambitious projects that might otherwise remain unrealized. The fund does not prescribe a single aesthetic or format; rather, it seeks compelling narratives that engage with science in innovative ways. This openness makes it a significant opportunity for artists and filmmakers committed to exploring scientific themes through a creative lens.
