About the residency

Founded by Robert Redford in 1981, Sundance Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences. Its flagship program, the Sundance Film Festival, has become the premier showcase for American and international independent cinema, while its labs and fellowships support artists in film, theatre, and new media. The Institute's ethos is rooted in fostering original storytelling and providing a sanctuary for creative risk-taking, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented voices.

Planning your application

For the Sundance Film Festival, submissions are open to feature films, short films, episodic work, and New Frontier projects (VR/AR, multimedia). Deadlines are typically in the summer and early fall; check the website for exact dates and fees. The Institute also offers various labs and grants, each with specific eligibility and application windows. Artists should prepare a compelling logline, a strong director's statement, and a work-in-progress or finished cut as required. Demonstrated artistic vision and originality are paramount; commercial potential is secondary. For New Frontier, projects that push the boundaries of storytelling and technology are encouraged. Always review the guidelines carefully and consider reaching out to programming staff at industry events for informal advice.
