Writers should carefully review the press's submission guidelines, which vary by genre and contest. Black Lawrence Press often charges reading fees for contests but offers free submissions during certain reading periods. It is advisable to submit during open reading windows and to familiarize oneself with the press's catalog to understand its aesthetic. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if work is accepted elsewhere. The press values polished, well-crafted manuscripts and encourages writers to proofread thoroughly before submitting.
Black Lawrence is a selective press. Number of previous publications is unimportant; what matters is the quality of the work. Please send your best work. Black Lawrence Press only accepts submissions via our online submissions manager.
