About the press

Black Mountain Press is an independent publisher rooted in the experimental and interdisciplinary spirit of Black Mountain College. Founded to support writing that resists easy categorization, the press emphasizes process, collaboration, and the materiality of the book. Its catalog spans poetry, hybrid texts, and critical prose, often produced in limited editions that foreground design and craft. The press operates as both a literary and artistic project, treating publication as an extension of creative practice rather than a mere endpoint.

Publishing focus

The Black Mountain Press’ first publications were done in collaboration with other publishers and focused on design and the then new digital technology. Established in 1994, the Black Mountain Press began independent book publishing with a focus on books in the outdoor industry, how-to guides, and destinations. The press has since redirected its efforts toward poetry, creative novels, children’s books and short story collections by emerging writers.

Before submitting, read several titles from the catalog to understand the press's aesthetic range. They favor manuscripts that challenge conventional genre boundaries and demonstrate a strong sense of voice and structure. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work within experimental traditions, but avoid over-explaining. Simultaneous submissions are typically accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Response times vary; patience is advised. Always check the website for open reading periods and specific guidelines, as they may change.
