About the press

Founded in 1974 by Bruce McPherson, McPherson & Company is an independent publishing house based in Kingston, New York, dedicated to literary fiction, essays, and books on the visual and performing arts. With a commitment to enduring literary value, the press has cultivated a discerning list that includes works by authors such as Paul West, Anna Maria Ortese, and Robert Kelly, alongside its renowned Recovered Classics series, which reintroduces neglected modernist texts. The press operates with a small, curatorial ethos, prioritizing craftsmanship and editorial rigor over market trends.

Publishing focus

An independent house since 1974, McPherson & Company publishes contemporary English and American fiction, twentieth-century international fiction in translation, nonfiction in the areas of art theory, ethnography, and (rarely) belles lettres. It published the 2010 fiction winner of the National Book Award, Lord of Misrule by Jaimy Gordon.

Writers and artists should approach McPherson & Company with a clear understanding of its literary and artistic focus. Submissions are typically accepted via postal mail; include a concise cover letter, a brief synopsis, and a sample of your work (for fiction, the first 50 pages; for nonfiction, a proposal and sample chapter). Simultaneous submissions are discouraged, and unsolicited manuscripts are read with care but may take several months for a response. Familiarize yourself with the press's catalog to ensure your work aligns with its ethos of literary merit and enduring value.

It is necessary to query first, preferably by email to bmcphersonco (at) gmail.com, prior to sending any manuscript, even by PDF attachment. Please acquaint yourself with our titles at our website before sending a query. We respond to queries quickly, and if we wish to see your manuscript we will send you a request.
