About the press

Poet’s Press is a distinguished independent publisher and literary arts organization with a decades-long commitment to poetry and the literary arts. Founded in the mid-20th century, it emerged from a small collective of poets and editors who sought to create a home for work that was formally adventurous yet emotionally resonant, often overlooked by commercial presses. Its core mission is to champion poetry as a vital, living art form, publishing books, broadsides, and a literary journal that balance emerging voices with established figures. The press operates with a nonprofit ethos, prioritizing artistic merit over market trends and fostering a community of readers and writers through public programming, workshops, and archival projects.

Publishing focus

Founded in 1971, the press specializes in lesser-known 1960s, 1970s New York poets, neoromantic and gothic poetry, annotated reprints of lost poets, new translations of classic literature, and topical or regional anthologies. The Yogh & Thorn Books imprint is used for more scholarly projects, including annotated editions. Recent translations have included Greek poets Callimachus and Meleager, The Eumenides of Aeschylus, Tang dynasty China, and Victor Hugo’s epic poem, The Terrible Year.

Poet’s Press accepts submissions through periodic reading windows, typically announced on its website and social media. Before submitting, read several titles from the press to understand its aesthetic—work that is lyrical, precise, and often explores the intersections of personal and political. Submit a complete manuscript of 48–80 pages, a cover letter, and a brief bio. Simultaneous submissions are accepted with immediate notification of acceptance elsewhere. Response times can be lengthy (3–6 months) due to the volume of submissions and the careful review process. Do not query about status before the stated period. For the journal, submit up to five poems. Always include a self-addressed stamped envelope if submitting by mail. The press values professionalism and patience; a well-prepared submission reflects respect for the editorial team’s time.
