About the press

Terrapin Books is an independent poetry press founded in 2016 by poet and editor Diane Lockward. Based in West Caldwell, New Jersey, the press emerged from Lockward's long-standing commitment to fostering a vibrant poetry community, particularly through her influential craft books and workshops. Terrapin Books specializes in full-length poetry collections, chapbooks, and anthologies, with a distinct focus on accessibility, craft, and the celebration of poetry as a living art. The press's ethos is rooted in a belief that poetry should be both rigorous and welcoming, publishing work that is finely crafted yet emotionally resonant, and often highlighting voices that might be overlooked by larger commercial presses.

Publishing focus

Terrapin Books is a small press for poetry books. They publish single author full-length collections, an occasional anthology, and craft books. They run two open reading periods per year and publish six to eight books per year.

Terrapin Books accepts submissions during specific reading periods, typically announced on its website and social media. Poets should submit full-length manuscripts (48–80 pages) or chapbook manuscripts (20–30 pages) via Submittable, following the guidelines precisely. The press values poems that demonstrate a strong command of craft, a cohesive thematic arc, and a distinctive voice. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if the manuscript is accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits and a bio. Avoid excessive follow-up; response times can be several months. Before submitting, read several Terrapin titles to understand the press's aesthetic, and consider attending one of Diane Lockward's workshops or webinars to gain insight into what the press seeks.

We have two open reading periods during the year: the month of February and the month of August. Read and follow the guidelines carefully. Submit only during our two open reading periods each year.
