About the press

Founded in 2015, Thirty West Publishing House is an independent press based in Philadelphia that has quietly built a reputation for publishing formally adventurous poetry, fiction, and hybrid texts. Its ethos is rooted in a commitment to work that resists easy categorization, favoring manuscripts that demonstrate a rigorous engagement with language and a willingness to take aesthetic risks. The press operates with a small, hands-on editorial team, prioritizing sustained author-editor relationships over volume, and its catalog reflects a curatorial eye for the strange, the lyrical, and the unclassifiable.

Publishing focus

Thirty West Publishing House is open to many literary themes and poetic forms and styles. Think of how you can escape the mundane before you submit. The succinct, the startling, and the sublime. Some humor will keep them turning pages. They will root for intimate characters and their relationships with whomever/whatever. Lastly, they are proud to publish a majority of debut authors in any capacity.

Manuscript submissions

Reading periodMay 1 to Jul 5
Reading feeNo
Response time3 to 6 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read at least two full-length titles from the catalog to gauge the press's aesthetic range. Thirty West favors manuscripts that are cohesive and polished, not merely promising; simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. For the Afterimages series, send no more than 15 pages of poetry or 20 pages of prose in a single PDF, with a brief cover letter that states the manuscript's word count and previous publications. Response times can stretch to six months, so patience is essential; do not query before the stated window has passed. Above all, avoid generic flattery—demonstrate a specific understanding of how your work converses with the press's existing list.

We host our open manuscript period in the summer. If you have a project that you're still working on, send us a proposal for a later release. Above all else, make sure we won't forget your name. Our Substack-based literary journal and newsletter, Afterimages , is always open for creative nonfiction, essays, and book reviews. Check often for schedules and special submission calls.
