About the press

Trio House Press is an independent poetry press founded in 2012 with the conviction that poetry should be a lived, communal practice rather than a solitary artifact. From its base in North Carolina, the press has built its identity around the book as a site of encounter—between poet and reader, text and world—and around a rotating editorial collective that resists the singular gatekeeper model. Its mission is to publish work that is formally alert, emotionally precise, and unafraid of the political, with a particular commitment to first and second books that might otherwise be overlooked by larger commercial houses. The press is best known for its annual contests, including the Scott King Award in Eco-Poetry, which reflects a sustained interest in how poetry engages ecological crisis without resorting to slogan or sentimentality.

Publishing focus

Trio House Press publishes literary creative nonfiction and poetry that highlights voices, topics, and angles that are underrepresented in contemporary literature, and that have the power to create empathy and deeper understanding of the subjects they cover. In addition to our annual open reading period in June, we sponsor three contests: The Trio Award for First or Second Book of Poetry; The Louise Bogan Poetry Award; and The Aurora Polaris Creative Nonfiction Prize.

Trio House Press accepts submissions primarily through its annual contests, with occasional open reading periods announced on its website and social media. Before submitting, read at least two recent titles from the press to gauge whether your manuscript aligns with its editorial sensibility—work that is formally deliberate, emotionally unguarded, and engaged with the world beyond the self. The press favors full-length collections (roughly 48–80 pages) and does not consider individual poems or chapbooks outside specific calls. Include a brief, factual cover letter: previous publications, relevant affiliations, and a one-sentence description of the manuscript. Avoid comparing your work to famous poets or making grand claims about its importance; the editors respond to clarity and craft. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if the manuscript is placed elsewhere. Response times vary from three to six months; a polite query after six months is appropriate. Finally, note that Trio House is a small, volunteer-run operation—patience and professionalism go a long way.

Please see our website, www.triohousepress.org , for detailed information about our submission guidelines and deadlines. We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts outside of listed periods unless they are submitted by literary agents with a detailed proposal. We also recommend reading and subscribing to our Substack, where you'll find interviews with our authors, tips for submitting, and more. Reading several of our titles is also recommended.
