About the residency
SÍM, the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists, is a professional organization founded in 1928 to advocate for the rights and interests of visual artists in Iceland. Its residency program, hosted at the SÍM Guesthouse in Reykjavík, extends this mission by offering international artists a dedicated space for research and production. The program emphasizes process over final product, encouraging residents to engage with Iceland's unique cultural and natural landscape without the pressure of a culminating exhibition. By fostering a community of artists, SÍM aims to facilitate meaningful exchanges that resonate beyond the residency period.

Artists should submit a clear, concise proposal that outlines their intended research or project during the residency, emphasizing how the Icelandic context will inform their practice. The selection committee values proposals that demonstrate a thoughtful engagement with place and a willingness to participate in the local artistic community. Applications are typically open to visual artists at any career stage, with deadlines announced on the website. It is advisable to apply well in advance and to tailor the proposal to the residency's ethos of process and exploration.
