About the residency

The Sarabande Foundation was established in 2006 by the late designer Lee Alexander McQueen to provide space, support, and a nurturing environment for emerging artists and designers. Rooted in McQueen's own experience of needing affordable studio space early in his career, the foundation offers subsidized studios, residencies, and grants to creatives who demonstrate exceptional promise and a singular vision. Its mission is to empower artists to take risks, develop their practice, and sustain long-term careers without the burden of prohibitive overhead costs.

Planning your application

Applications are typically accepted through open calls announced on the foundation's website and social media. Artists should present a cohesive body of work that demonstrates a distinct voice and a clear trajectory, rather than a scattered portfolio. Emphasize how Sarabande's support would specifically enable your practice to evolve—whether through access to space, mentorship, or financial breathing room. The selection committee values authenticity, experimentation, and a willingness to engage with the foundation's interdisciplinary community. Avoid generic statements; instead, articulate your needs and ambitions with precision and honesty.
