Literary Journal
100 Word Story

Editorial focus
The whole is a part and the part is a whole. The 100-word format forces the writer to question each word, to reckon with Gustave Flaubert’s mot juste in a way that even most flash fiction doesn’t. At the same time, the brevity of the form allows the writer “to keep a story free from explanation,” as Walter Benjamin wrote. No one will ever know the whole story in other words. They can only collect a bag full of shards that each seem perfect.
Submitting your work
Before submitting, carefully review the journal's archives to understand the range and tone of stories they publish. Ensure your piece is exactly 100 words—not 99 or 101—as this is strictly enforced. Stories should be self-contained narratives with a clear arc, avoiding fragments or prose poems. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your submission, and proofread meticulously; every word counts. Response times vary, so patience is advised.
We open submissions for the first week of every month.
