About the magazine

Founded in 2001 by Dr. Danielle Ofri and a group of physicians and writers at Bellevue Hospital, the Bellevue Literary Review is a literary journal that examines the intersections of medicine, health, and the human condition. As the first literary magazine to emerge from a medical institution, it has carved a unique space for writing that explores illness, healing, and the body with both clinical precision and artistic nuance. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, and nonfiction that engage with these themes, welcoming submissions from both established and emerging writers. Its mission is to foster a deeper understanding of the human experience through literature, bridging the gap between the arts and sciences.

Editorial focus

Bellevue Literary Review is an award-winning literary journal that mines the connective tissue between illness, healing, and the arts. Through fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, BLR explores these universal conditions and life’s shared vulnerabilities.

Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify the journal immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. All submissions should be made through the online portal, and writers should include a brief bio.

Bellevue Literary Review seeks high-caliber, unpublished work, broadly and creatively related to our themes of health, healing, illness, the mind, and the body. We seek character-driven fiction with original voices and strong settings. While we are always interested in creative explorations in style, we do lean toward classic short stories. We are looking for essays that reach beyond the standard illness narrative to develop a topic in an engaging and original manner. (Please note that we do not publish graphic narratives, academic discourses, or works with footnotes.) We encourage poems that are accessible to a wide audience. Characteristics we look for are vivid writing, strong narrative, and rendering the familiar new.
