Editorial focus
FICTION has traditionally attempted to make accessible the inaccessible, to bring the experimental to a broader audience, but it represents no particular school of fiction, except the innovative. As a result of its willingness to publish the difficult, experimental and unusual, FICTION has a unique reputation in the U.S. and abroad as a journal of future directions. It prides itself on publishing established writers along with new, emerging voices that have not yet been heard.
Submitting your work
Artists should approach FICTION with a clear sense of how their work engages with or challenges narrative conventions. The organization values conceptual rigor and a willingness to take risks, so submissions that feel safe or derivative are unlikely to gain traction. Carefully review past award winners and exhibitions to understand the aesthetic range. Proposals should articulate the process and questions driving the work, not just the final product. FICTION accepts submissions through its website, typically with an annual deadline; check the site for specific guidelines and fees. A concise artist statement and work samples that demonstrate a distinctive voice are essential.
Before submitting, nonsubscribers are encouraged to read several issues of the magazine to determine if their work fits with FICTION . Portions of the current issue and past issues are available to read online. Print versions are available for purchase by single-issue order and subscription on our subscription page.
