About the magazine

Granta is a literary magazine and publisher founded in 1889 by students at Cambridge University as a periodical of student writing. After a hiatus, it was revived in 1979 by Bill Buford, who transformed it into a leading international journal of new writing. Since then, Granta has been instrumental in identifying and publishing emerging voices in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and photography. Its core mission is to champion the best new writing, regardless of genre or geography, and to provide a platform for writers at pivotal moments in their careers. The magazine is known for its discerning editorial eye and its commitment to literary excellence, often setting the agenda for contemporary literature.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Granta accepts submissions of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and photography. They are particularly interested in work that is original, urgent, and well-crafted. For non-fiction, they seek reported pieces, essays, and memoir that demonstrate a strong narrative voice and rigorous research. Low-income non-fiction submissions, as indicated by the sample call, suggest a commitment to accessibility and supporting writers facing financial barriers. Before submitting, read recent issues to understand the magazine's range and tone. Follow their submission guidelines carefully, including word limits and formatting. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify them immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Response times can be lengthy, so patience is advised. They do not accept submissions by post. For low-income submissions, be prepared to provide documentation if requested.
